Class description:

MAIN CLASSES IN 14th-CENTURY ITALIAN POLYPHONY
The Ensemble Micrologus musicians will deal with performance and interpretation of 14th-century Italian Music, also known as “Ars Nova”. In written texts, that period marked the shift from monody to a more elaborate polyphony, with 2- and 3-part compositions by the great 14th-century Masters (Francesco Landini, Jacopo da Bologna, Gherardello, etc.): madrigals, cacce and ballads. You will also study instrumental music for salterelli and istampite from the London Codex.
Good technical background required.

SINGING CLASS: 14th-CENTURY POLYPHONY IN FRANCE
14th-century France was dominated by Guillaume de Machaut’s music and poetry.
This class is addressed to singers and suggests introspection into the monumental work of the greatest French poet-musician.
Interpreting his music means learning a text which is now transient, as well as the different reading techniques used by singers at that time (notation, solmization, musica ficta, etc.).
You will sing some of his motets and a part of his renowned “Missa Notra Dame” (Notre Dame Mass) directly in the original version, where each voice has their own independence.
The class will also deal with a specific vocal work on this music, on the basis of French and Latin pronunciation in the 14th century.
Good technical background required.

DANCE
15th -century Italian dances and Basse dance. You will learn how to improvise with the choreographies of Masters Domenico and Guglielmo, with a special focus on a 14th-century dance and a basse danse de Bourgogne.

AFTERNOON CLASSES

NOTATION
A class in 14th-century Italian notation (with musical examples studied in vocal and instrumental classes).
Open to all participants.

ENSEMBLE MUSIC
It is addressed to SOLO SINGING and STRING INSTRUMENT classes.
Ensemble music for WIND AND PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS, which will be grouped according to the principles of 14th-century LOUD music, with reed flutes, bagpipes, trumpets, and percussion.
The class has two parts: the first one is on theory and aims at analyzing difficult aspects of specific texts. The second part is practical and deals with both technical and playful aspects of playing and singing together.

SEMINAR ON 14th-CENTURY ITALIAN ICONOGRAPHY AND ORGANOLOGY.
