9th International Course of Medieval Music

“Ad tripudium rotundum”

Songs and dances from the Middle Ages to the beginning of the Renaissance

 

The main theme will be music for dancing, songs associated with dance and instrumental music for dancing. Ballatas, rotundelli, bal redon, basse danses, balli, laudi, and sacred historical and folk dances.

For this, René Zosso has been invited to hold a workshop on SONG IN FRENCH MEDIEVAL AND FOLK DANCES (24-26 July).

The International Course is held in collaboration with the Fondation Royaumont in Paris, which will provide three scholarships for singers who will be selected for participation by the end of February 2018.

The course includes a final concert, on 28 July, which will be held at Palazzo Trinci in Foligno, and which will be repeated at the Festival del Medioevo in Gubbio (end of September 2018).

RUNNING ORDER OF THE COURSE

 

MORNING: Individual lessons, Choral singing, Historical dances

AFTERNOON: Conferences and Workshops

EVENING: Concerts by Teachers and others 

As far as vocal music is concerned, there will be two classes. The first is intended for solo singing, looking at fifteenth century Italian repertoires: arie per cantar versi, sonetti, capitoli, strambotti and barzellette. The other is for choral singing, where the refrains and songs that accompanied the dances will be taught (cantar danzando).

MORNING: 9 am-1 pm MAIN COURSES

LESSONS are INDIVIDUAL, and concern both technique and style.
In addition to the study of free choice repertoire, unpublished or little known composers and their compositions will form an important part of the material to be looked at. Other students enrolled in the COURSE can attend these lessons as auditors.

Choral singing and Historical dance teaching will be given as GROUP LESSONS.

AFTERNOON : GROUP ACTIVITIES

CONFERENCES

For everyone; every afternoon a specialist will address a specific theme.

 

5 pm-7 pm

ENSEMBLE FOR WIND AND PERCUSSION

From 5 pm to 6 pm, students from the Dance Class will also participate.

This is a GROUP WORKSHOP, for a precise group of instrumentalists: those playing wind instrument and percussion, known at the time as ALTA CAPPELLA who, under the guidance of two teachers, will work on the pieces selected for this type of group. From 5 pm to 6 pm, the students of the dance class will also participate.

 

5 pm-7 pm

VOCAL AND INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLE

From 5 pm to 6 pm, students from the Singing Classes will also participate.

From 6 pm to 7 pm, students from the Dance Class will also participate.

This is a GROUP WORKSHOP, in which all singers and instrumentalists, also supported by their teachers, will perform together. The repertoire will be pieces selected for this activity. A large group is formed, like an orchestra, a unique opportunity to work with lots of other students.

 

5 pm-7 pm

ENSEMBLE CLASS FOR SMALL GROUPS

This is a GROUP WORKSHOP, for small groups of singers and instrumentalists. They will be supported by a single teacher, and together will perform pieces selected for this type of particular group. Recommended for SMALL GROUPS which are already established (coaching).

 

 

6 pm-7.30 pm

SINGING IN FRENCH MEDIEVAL AND FOLK DANCES (24-26 July)

This is a WORKSHOP for SINGERS. Each day one of the following topics will be discussed:
– Song to accompany dance in French oral traditional repertoires.
– Breton folk dances.
– The rondeaux of Guillaume de Machaut.
