Where is that our medieval history is best preserved and meets the discovery of the art of medieval music? Where you can breathe and live a day into medieval music, if not in Umbria?
The EUROPEAN STUDY CENTRE OF MEDIEVAL MUSIC “ADOLFO BROEGG ” provides, at its headquarters in Spello (Umbria – Italy), a residence to discover the musical culture of the Middle Ages through the experience of its artists, who promote and play, for several years, in throughout Europe, this particular music.

ACTIVITIES

“IN FESTA” CONCERT-LESSON

A concert of medieval music, with a thorough explanation of the musical instruments, faithful reconstructions of those of the period.
The instruments used are: portative organ, viola, rebec, lute, gittern, straight trumpets, tambourine, cymbals, pipe and tabor, medievale recorder, flute, double flute, shawn, bagpipe.
Concurrently with the music, you will be the PROJECTION of IMAGES, taken from paintings, frescoes and miniatures, especially from the Italian territory (if you choose this theme), where there are accurate depiction of scenes with music and musical instruments.
Also, coming from our LIBRARY, we will bring the facsimile color of most beautiful and important musical manuscripts Italians, for an explanation of the art of writing: the Squarcialupi Code.

“AMOR MI FA CANTAR” SINGING WORKSHOP

Medieval songs can be pleasant and easy?
This workshop will guide you to the experience of discovering and sing some of the most famous medieval songs (Italian ballads, rondo and French songs, Carmina Burana in Latin …).

“CHOMINCIAMENTO DI GIOIA” WORKSHOP FOR ISTRUMENTS

Practical workshop group to play the most beautiful melodies of medieval times: Praises of the XIII century., Carmina Burana, Troubadours, medieval dances, etc ..

A pleasant approach to medieval dance under the direction of an experienced teacher, to learn and move on the steps of the dances in vogue at the time, revised into simple group choreographies.

“MASTRO GIORDANO” MAKING HISTORICAL INSTRUMENTS WORKSHOP

How they made the musical instruments in the Middle Ages?
In this workshop you enter the workshop of a master luthier who makes violas, rebecs, hurdy-gurdy, lutes …
Discovering the woods, resins, paints, and abilities today saved by the passion of rare dreamers.

“IN SPELLO SPLENDENS” GUIDED TOUR OF THE MEDIEVAL SPELLO

How was the city today compared to medieval? Its monuments and buildings of that time still have a meaning for us?
During this visit you will discover the medieval Spello, heir to the ancient Romans, precious town in Umbria.

Duration: 2h (included Pinacoteca comunale and Cappella Bella)

GUIDED TOUR TO A NEARBY TOWN

Guided tour in Foligno, or Bevagna, important towns of Umbria near Spello, to discover the city and medieval works of art testifying the music and musical instruments in the territory, seen in relation to local art (The Romanico , Gothic and Humanism) and the special musical symbolism.
